Summary: |
Sergeant Cory Wride was shot and killed from ambush while checking on what he believed was an abandoned vehicle on Highway 73, near Eagle Mountain.
A suspect near the scene opened fire with a high-powered rifle, fatally wounding Sergeant Wride before he was able to exit his patrol. Sergeant Wride had given dispatchers a description of the car before he was shot and another deputy spotted it a short time later.
Investigators were able to get a description of a possible suspect vehicle and agencies throughout Utah County and surrounding counties. At about 2:51 P.M., a Deputy with the Utah County Sheriff's Office located the suspect vehicle in Santaquin and pursued. During the course of the pursuit, the suspect fired shots at the pursuing Deputy and striking him in the head. That Deputy, Greg Sherwood, was hospitalized and has undergone surgery. He is expected to recover.
The suspect fled into Juab County and while in teh City of Nephi he tried to hijack several different vehicles. The suspect did finally hijack another car and fled south on I-15 through Juab County. At about 3:20 P.M. the suspect crossed through a median, in front of north bound traffic, and ended up against a fence. Juab County Sheriff's Deputies arrived there and the suspect fired shots at them. Juab County Deputies returned fire, hitting suspect, and he was taken into custody.
Deputy Greg Sherwood, age 38, was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo where he underwent surgery. He is in ICU in critical condition. Deputy Sherwood is a 13 year veteran of law enforcement, having worked for Springville Police, Spanish Fork Police, and for the last 2 years with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, where he is a K9 Handler assigned to the Patrol Division.
The suspect, who is not yet being identified, was also taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he also underwent surgery. He is also expected to survive.
