Bio: Heath was born to James and Rebecca (McDonald) Gumm.
He graduated from Mullen High School in 2004 and earned his POST certification from Arapahoe Community College in 2011. He worked for Cripple Creek Police Department and Adams County Sheriff's Department. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by Adams County Sheriff's Department in 2017.
Heath loved traveling, being outdoors, spending time with friends and family and playing hockey. He was loved by everyone who met him. His kindness, easy going nature and wonderful sense of humor will be missed. He will be remembered as an amazing husband, son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. |

Summary: |
Deputy Sheriff Heath Gumm was shot and killed during a foot pursuit near 88th Avenue and Dawson Street, in Thornton.
Deputies had responded to an assault in progress call at approximately 7:30 pm and became involved in the foot pursuit with one of the subjects. The man ran behind a house in the 8700 block of Dawson Street. As Deputy Gumm ran behind the house he called out to the subject to stop. Dep. Gumm was then heard to loudly say he(the subj) was reaching for something in his waistband. The susp. and Dep. Gumm then traded shots. Dep. Gumm was shot and killed by the subject; being struck in the chest.
The subject fled and was subsequently apprehended in the area, found hiding in a treehouse. He was charged with murder of a peace officer and two additional counts of murder. A search continued for two additional subjects.
