Sergeant J. Martin Corcoran wash shot and killed as he questioned two burglars.
Sergeant Corcoran observed two burglars waiting for a streetcar carrying a basket containing jewelry and other stolen items. When Sergeant Corcoran questioned the men, one burglar pulled out a revolver and fired. Sergeant Corcoran was fatally wounded in the exchange.
Sergeant Corcoran's killer was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
