Summary: |
Officer Charles Godfrey was shot and killed during an arrest while assigned to the 16th Precinct.
A Reserve Officer his wife were attacked and called for help as Patrolman Godfrey was passing through the vicinity. Patrolman Godfrey took immediate action to apprehend suspects and, while in pursuit of the suspects, was killed by Friendly fire.
Officer Godfrey had served with the agency for one year and had served with the U.S. Postal Service and with the United States Army during World War I previously; he was survived by his wife and three children. Officer Godfrey was the second Black NYPD Officer to be killed in the line of duty. He is buried in Cypress Hill Cemetery in the Police Arlington Gardens, Brooklyn, New York. p
