Sergeant Hewitt and Officer James Quigley were shot and killed following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle. When the vehicle they were pursuing crashed, the suspect exited the car and opened fire. Officer Quigley was killed and Sergeant Hewitt suffered mortal wounds. Sergeant Hewitt succumbed to his wounds 20 days later.
