Deputy Marshal Henry Dale was shot and killed when he interrupted a robbery of a liquor store while searching for a fugitive in Chicago, Illinois. During the ensuing shootout Deputy Marshal Dale and one of the four robbers were shot and killed. The remaining three suspects were apprehended within a few days.
Deputy Marshal Dale had served with the Marshals Service for only two weeks after retiring from the US Army. He was a veteran of the Korean War, during which time he was a prisoner of war. He was survived by his wife and three children.
