Detective Caccavale was shot and killed while working an off duty security job at a cash checking store. When he arrived at the store with a large sum of money he was confronted by three armed men. As he attempted to draw his weapon he was shot. The suspects took his gun and as he attempted to draw his backup weapon he was shot again.
The suspects fled the scene but were arrested and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
Detective Caccavale had served with the New York City Transit Police Department for 11 years.
