Officer Hawkins was struck and killed by a pickup truck. He was on a nighttime undercover assignment attempting to cross a freeway frontage road when the accident occurred. Officer Hawkins helped establish a hostagebarricade negotiations unit and was a negotiator in hostage situations.
Officer Hawkins had been with the agency for 12 years and was survived by his wife and two children.
