Lieutenant William Farrell died on July 24, 1991, from Hepatitis B, which he contracted on November 6, 1977, while arresting a female suspect. During the arrest the suspect began biting and scratching Lieutenant Farrell.
Following the incident he developed chronic hepatitis which caused his health to deteriorate until his death.
