Bio: As a young man, Russ Miller served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Admiral's staff and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He completed his six year tour of duty as a 2nd Class Petty Officer.

In 1987 at 38 years of age, Russ became a Chino Police Officer. He was a member of Class 90 of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Police Academy, graduating February 5, 1988.

Russ was an avid horseman and a member of the Chino Police Department Mounted Enforcement Team. He was also a Field Training Officer for many years, teaching, molding and shaping young officers.

On February 1, 2000, Russ was struck and killed by a drunk driver while conducting a traffic stop. Russ' professionalism and love for his career profoundly impacted the lives of the many young officers that he trained. He was a 'Cop's Cop' and admired by all who worked with him. He was a great asset to the Chino Police Department and the community.

He is greatly missed by all who knew him. He will never be forgotten by those who he touched.

Summary: Officer Russell Miller was struck by a drunk driver while making a traffic stop in the early morning hours.

During the stop, Officer Miller was walking from his cruiser towards the driver of a pickup truck when the drunk driver struck him from behind, throwing him into the bed of the pickup truck. After the collision, the drunk fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later after crashing into a telephone pole.

The driver of the pickup truck flagged down another passing patrol car for assistance. Officer Miller was flown to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately ten hours after the incident.

Disposition: The suspect was charged with second-degree murder and felony hit and run.
