The two were in San Antonio for Army National Guard training and were leaving a club when an armed man exited an SUV and demanded their wallets.

Patrolman Stewart immediately drew attention from his friend as he attempted to subdue the assailant. The man opened fire as he fled the scene, striking Patrolman Stewart.

Despite being wounded, Patrolman Stewart was able to provided a description of the shooter to responding officers. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained for eight days before succumbing to his wounds.

As a result of Patrolman Stewart's descriptions, three suspects were apprehended and charged with capital murder. In September, 2007, one of the suspects pled guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 35 years.
