Bio: Born on October 15, 1971, in Bridgeport, Shaft was the son of Princella and Sherman Hunter, Jr., formerly of Stratford and Beacon Falls.
After graduating from St. Joseph's High School in 1990, where he was a valued player on the varsity football team that won back-to-back state titles in 1988 and 1989, Shaft continued his education earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC.
Joining the US Marine Corps right after college, he served from 1994 to 2000 and was honorably discharged as a Captain.
A captain in the U.S. military from 1994 to 2000, he joined the Maryland State Police in 2000, and was nominated in his first year for the Baltimore Sun's "Police Officer of the Year" award. That year, after a van landed in the Middle Patuxent River, Hunter rescued another trooper and the civilian driver by rappelling down an embankment.
Shaft received numerous honors, accommodations and citations during his 11 year career with the Maryland State Police, including; "Sniper Murders Task Force" recognition for his countless hours of investigative support in 2002 and the "Trooper of the Year" award in 2003.
Also in 2003 he is on record for having one of the largest drug apprehensions in the state, along with his trusted K-9 "Bear". Shaft recently was assigned to the 2010 and 2011 Legislative Sessions security detail receiving official citations for his efforts. Military and Maryland State Police funeral honors were held on Friday, May 27, 2011, with interment at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium, MD.

Trooper Shaft Hunter was killed when his patrol car collided with the back of a tractor trailer that was parked on the shoulder of I-95, near the entrance to the Jessup rest area in Howard County, at approximately 2:40 am. It is believed that he was pursuing a speeding motorcycle when the collision occurred.
