Bio: Corproal Gogian was a U.S. military veteran. He served nearly 25 years in the military with the Marine Corps Reserve and the Kansas Air National Guard.

Gogian began his military career in April 1981 and spent six years in the Marine reserves.

He joined the Kansas Air National Guard in April 1991 and retired in April 2010.

He left as a senior master sergeant and chief of a small weather unit that helped assess flying conditions for guard refueling tankers and Army helicopters.

David was born May 19, 1962, in Lynwood, CA, son of Frank and Saundra (Rowland) Gogian. He graduated from Eldorado High School, Las Vegas, NV, and later earned his Master s Degree in Criminal Justice at Washburn University, Topeka.

David married Simona Edington on December 12, 1996. David served in the US Marine Corps from 1981-1986, and the Kansas Air National Guard from 1991-2010, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant.

He became a Reserve Police Officer in 1992 for the Topeka Police Department. David later became a full time Police Officer in 2004 for TPD, where he was involved in the Community Police Unit, the Gang Task Force, and most recently, the Traffic Enforcement Unit. He was a member of the Topeka Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3. David served alongside his eldest son, Brandon, with TPD.

Fatal Incident Summary

Location: KS   USA   Sun. Dec. 16, 2012
Summary: Corporal David Gogian and Police Officer Jeff Atherly were shot and killed while checking on a suspicious vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, at 1400 SW Huntoon Street, shortly after 6:00 pm.

Several minutes after making contact with the multiple subjects in the vehicle one them opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Atherly and Corporal Gogian. A third officer on the scene was not wounded. The subject who opened fire fled in the vehicle. He was located in a home on SW Western where he barricaded himself for several hours. He was eventually shot and killed after exiting the home while carrying a firearm.

Disposition: A nearly two-hour standoff in the 300 block of Southwest Western Avenue in Topeka ended Monday morning with police removing the alleged shooter from the home.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation officers and other authorities surrounded the home after receiving a tip, and yelled the suspect's name, believed to be 22-year-old David Edward Tiscareno.

SWAT team officers lobbed tear gas into the home just after 6 a.m. and the suspect came out of the home carrying a gun. A shootout ensued and the suspect was killed.
