Summary: |
A Saturday morning crash that claimed the life of 36-year-old Constable Mark Nieuwenhuis was originally reported as a single vehicle accident. Investigators now say a Delta police constable may have been chasing another vehicle at the time of his death. RCMP traffic accident investigators are working with the Delta police to determine the cause of the 2 a.m. accident on River Road and Russell Drive, which occurred while the motorcycle officer was on duty. "New information suggests there may have been a pursuit or at least an attempt by our member to close the distance between (himself) and a speeding vehicle," said Delta police spokesman Constable Ron Gerbrandt. An unsubstantiated witness of the accident reported he had observed a sports car passing him at a very high rate of speed moments before the Cst. Nieuwenhuis' crash - likely as he was pursuing the vehicle. In a statement expressing "deep regret and much sadness," Delta police chief Jim Cessford described Nieuwenhuis as a "devoted husband and father well respected and liked by members of this department and the police community in general." Nieuwenhuis was a nine-year veteran of the Delta force who had previously served with the Winnipeg and Vancouver police departments. He wrote a regular column about traffic safety which was posted on the Delta police department web site and published in a local newspaper. A coach with the Delta minor baseball league, in which his children played, Nieuwenhuis was remembered by one minute of silence at Sunday's opening ceremonies. Shelley Sweeney, the president of the Boys' and Girls' club of Delta, said Nieuwenhuis was a warm-hearted officer who was especially good with young people. "His compassion when it came to the underprivileged and kids, he just shone," Sweeney said. The motorcycle cop turned marathon cyclist to help raise more than $100,000 for cancer research and child-related cancer prevention by taking part in a six-day, 600-km bicycle marathon for the Canadian Cancer Society, "Tour For a Friend," last year.He was survived by his wife and three young children.
