Summary:
Constable David Kirkwood was killed when he was involved in a three hour shootout. The shooting started when a summons officer accompanied by a police officer attempted to serve a court document on a 22 year old man. A second police car and a motorcycle officer arrived immediately after. Before the situation was brought to a conclusion, at least 50 officers were involved. Three other officers were injured in the shooting. One officer was in critical condition.
The death of Officer Kirkwood inspired the Canadian Police Officers Memorial on Parliament Hill Ottawa.
At the time of his death Constable Kirkwood was survived by his pregnant wife.
