Summary: |
Constable L'Ecuyer was shot and killed following a chase with a stolen car. He died in hospital a few hours after the shooting in the city's north end. Police said the shooting occurred after a brief chase involving a police van and a stolen car. Following a collision between the two vehicles, three suspects got out of the vehicle and a foot chase ensued.
The officer, a seven-year police veteran, was shot several times in the chest. Constable L'Ecuyer and his partner both returned fire but did not strike the suspect.
Police detained two people and were searching for a third, who hijacked and fled in a white 1991 Pontiac Tempest. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident. On November 1, 2003, the man was convicted of first degree murder in connection with Constable L'Ecuyer's death and sentenced to life in prison.
Constable L'Ecuyer is survived by his wife and two children. His late father was retired from the police force. His brother is an officer in St-Hubert, QC, and his uncle is also a police officer in Montreal. He was part of the crowd control unit. He was assigned to unit 82-6 from the north command station in Anjou.
