Fatal Incident Summary
Offender: |
William R. Thornton :: Caucasian
/
Male
- 27 years old
Thornton’s first interaction with police came in 2000, when at the age of 15, he was arrested and convicted of attempted aggravated assault.
One year later, he was in trouble again, this time for marijuana possession.
Then in 2003, Thornton was sentenced to 6 ½ years in prison for armed robbery and theft.
Shortly after his release in 2009, Thornton was sent back to prison after stealing his stepfather’s truck and running from police when they tried to stop him.
In 2012, he was convicted and sentenced to more prison time for drug possession and resisting arrest.
Phoenix police say Thornton was also a suspect in an attempted murder on February 25.
In that incident, a man was shot in the back in a neighborhood near 40th Avenue and Camelback.
===================================================
Thornton was released from Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis on Jan. 9 after serving 1½ years for a dangerous-drug violation and resisting arrest.
Relative to a felony warrant, Detectives had been pursuing him when his white sedan collided with a truck at the intersection. Witnesses said the man ran from the sedan, 'exchanged gunfire' with the officers and was shot and killed.

Summary: |
Detectives initially located Thornton near 39th Avenue and Camelback Road around 3:15 p.m.
They were conducting surveillance outside a north Phoenix business that Thornton was known to frequent. When the suspect arrived at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, Thornton realized he was under surveillance and a short pursuit took place, police said.
Det. Hobbs and his partner followed Thornton to 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, where he was involved in a crash with an 83-year-old woman and a man in his 50s at the intersection just before the shooting ensued.
The victims in the crash suffered minor injuries.
Thornton immediately started shooting at the detectives after getting out of his car and hiding behind bushes.
The detectives were getting out of their vehicle at the time.
Thornton was on the passenger side of the detectives' vehicle, and his gunfire struck Hobbs and his partner, police said.
Hobbs reportedly returned fire after he was wounded and shot Thornton numerous times.
The officers were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition after the 3:10 p.m. shooting. The mortally wounded officer died about two hours later. The second officer was recovering in the intensive-care unit Monday night.
