Bio: Trooper Rich had served with the Alaska State Troopers for 3-1/2 years and had previously served with the North Pole Police Department for four years.
Rich was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Fairbanks. He first worked as a patrolman with the North Pole Police Department southeast of Fairbanks before deciding to join the troopers in 2011.
With the troopers, he spent most of his career on patrol. Survivors include his fiance, their one-year-old son and his fiance's eight-year-old son.
At the time of his death, Rich was in the process of adopting the older boy.
Johnson and Rich joined the interior rural unit on January 1. The unit covers 23 villages scattered across a sparse terrain.
Their deaths came the same day the name of Manokotak village public safety Officer Thomas Madole was added to the Indian Country Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Artesia, New Mexico.
Madole was shot and killed March 19, 2013, while responding to a domestic violence call in the Alaska Native village. |

Summary: |
Sergeant Scott Johnson and Trooper Gabriel Rich were shot and killed while investigating reports that a person had brandished a firearm in the village of Tanana the night before(wed.)
According to reports from several residents, local man Arvin Kangas became irate when he wasn’t paid $150 for a couch. He allegedly tried to remove the couch from the buyer's home and made threats to some of the villagers, which one resident took seriously enough to call Tanana's village public safety officer.
On Thursday, village public safety officer Mark Haglin called for backup from the troopers in Fairbanks, 130 miles east of Tanana. VPSOs are unarmed peace officers. The troopers who responded to Haglin's call tried to arrest Kangas, several residents reported. Both troopers had gone to the home on Front Street to speak to the suspect. At some point during the investigation both troopers were fatally shot.
According to a member of the Tanana city council, who said he heard the information from law enforcement officers, Kangas'’ son emerged from their First Avenue home and allegedly shot and killed the two troopers. Someone was able to detain the younger man, but the elder Kangas wandered off with an assault rifle and ended up in a home a block away on Eamole Street.
Eventually, both suspects were taken into custody without incident.
