Summary: |
Police Officer Darrin Reed was shot and killed after responding to a suspicious person call.
Officer Reed and other officers responded to a suspicions person call at a motel. They were unable to locate a subject. They were called back to the location after leaving the initial call. When Officer Reed and other officers arrived, they located the subject. The subject fled on foot, with officers in pursuit. During the pursuit, the subject produced a handgun and fired, striking Officer Reed.
Officer Reed was transported to taken to Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his wounds.
Members of the White Mountain Special Response Team and area law enforcement officers surrounded the subject(Erickson) at the Lake of the Woods in Pinetop-Lakeside where he barricaded himself with a teenage female hostage, after fleeing the scene where he shot and killed Officer Darin Reed. The Arizona Department of Public Safety's SWAT team then responded and took over the scene.
During approximately six and a half hours of negotiation, the subject(36-year-old Daniel Erickson) sporadically shot at officers. The standoff came to an end when officers finally returned fire, killing subj. Erickson and safely recovering the teenage girl. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
