Bio: Sergeant Supervisor Detective Gerard T. Beyrodt joined the New York City Police Department on October 25, 1968. He was promoted to detective in May 1988, to sergeant in May 1988, and to sergeant supervisor detective in December 1999. A 34-year veteran of the NYPD, Sergeant Beyrodt served in several commands during his career, including the 10 and Midtown North Precincts, the Detective Bureau Special Investigations Division, the Joint Bank Robbery Task Force, Detective Borough Manhattan South Homicide, and the 32, Midtown South, and Manhattan North Detective Squads. He made 127 arrests over the course of his time with the Department and was recognized 10 times for Excellent Police Duty and six times for Meritorious Police Duty. Sergeant Beyrodt retired on August 1, 2003. He died on October 20, 2015. |

Summary: |
Sergeant Gerard Beyrodt died as the result of cancer he developed following his exposure to hazardous materials at the World Trade Center site during the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
He had responded to the scene just as the South Tower was struck by the second plane. As he assisted civilians flee the area the South Tower collapsed. The impact knocked Sergeant Beyrodt to the ground and he was caught in the toxic cloud of debris. His leg was run over by a vehicle that was attempting to leave the area. Despite his injuries he remained at the scene and continued to assist injured victims for several hours, refusing to receive medical treatment until being ordered to do so.
He remained hospitalized for several months as a result of his injuries.
