Summary: |
Trooper Kevin Conner was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle on U.S. 701, near Sellers Town Road, in Columbus County at 12:15 am.
Trooper Conner stopped a white GMC pickup truck for speeding on U.S. 701. The truck's driver pulled over onto the shoulder and Conner approached the vehicle. The driver of the pickup, which had been stolen, then fired several shots, striking the trooper.
A good samaritan happened upon Trooper Conner less than five minutes after he was shot and called 911.
Conner was treated at the scene by Whiteville Fire Department Medical Responders and Whiteville Rescue, and taken to Columbus Regional. Because of bad weather, Connor could not be flown to New Hanover Regional trauma center. Flight paramedics from the grounded helicopter rode the ambulance to Wilmington with Conner.
The trooper later died at New Hanover.
After reviewing the dash-cam video from Trooper Conner's cruiser a be-on-the-lookout alert for the suspect vehicle. Fair Bluff officers saw the truck about an hour later and gave chase.
Fair Bluff police officers were on patrol looking for the suspect vehicle when Suspect Davis drove into town. Officers chased Davis to the railroad crossing on Rogers Street, where the pickup got stuck in the railway bed. Davis then fled on foot and was captured after a manhunt involving Highway Patrol troopers; dozens of officers from Columbus, Bladen, Brunswick, and Robeson counties; Division of Motor Vehicles Enforcement; the State Bureau of Investigation and other agencies.
Traffic was blocked on a two-mile stretch near Sellers Town Road early Wednesday morning while investigators searched the crime scene. Rogers Street also was blocked off in Fair Bluff while technicians searched the pickup truck said to have been driven by Davis.

Disposition: |
The 20-year-old suspect, who was driving a stolen truck, served three months in prison and is now on probation for firing a gun into an occupied car in Chadbourn in 2015. He is being held in the Columbus County Jail with no bond and has been charged with first-degree murder.
On October 23rd, 2018, a second 18-year-old suspect was arrested in Loris, South Carolina in connection with Trooper Conner's murder. He is awaiting extradition to North Carolina where he will be charged with first-degree murder. Evidence shows he was in the truck with the killer. He served two months in a North Carolina prison earlier in the year for possession of a firearm by a felon and identity theft. |
