Summary: |
Officer Clayton Townsend was struck and killed by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on northbound State Route 101 just south of McDowell Road, in Scottsdale.
Officer Townsend was conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired registration on Loop 101, south of the McDowell Road off-ramp in the emergency lane. He was standing by the driver's side door when Sanstead's vehicle struck him at 6:04 p.m.
Townsend suffered head trauma during the incident and was taken to the Honor Health Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center after another Salt River officer had begun rendering first aid at the scene.
The susp. driver(Sanstead) told Arizona DPS officials that he was texting and driving at the time of the crash. A witness also told detectives that Sanstead was looking down at his phone while driving his black passenger car before crossing over two lanes in the road and hitting Townsend.
When asked by detectives whether he should have been on his phone and driving at the same time, Sanstead admitted he knew he should have not have been, a probable-cause statement DPS submitted to a court after his arrest shows.
|
Disposition: |
Susp. Sanstead was arrested and booked on one count each of endangerment, reckless manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Sanstead's bond was set at $100,000. |
