K-9 Deputy Sheriff Matt Jones was struck and killed by a vehicle as he and the chief of the Riesel Police Department, Chief Krumnow, assisted a disabled motorist on Texas 6 near County Road 190.
Another vehicle approaching the scene hydroplaned on the wet road surface and struck both officers. Deputy Jones was killed and the police chief was seriously injured.
Chief Krumnow taken by medical helicopter to Baylor Scott and White in Waco for initial treatment. He was then taken to Baylor Scott and White in Temple, where he was taken into surgery to remove his spleen. Chief Krumnow is now out of surgery and in stable condition. Chief Krumnow suffered a dislocated knee, 8 to 9 broken ribs, and a lacerated spleen.
Deputy Jones' canine partner was in their patrol car and was not injured.
