Bio: Little is known of J.L. Anders other that he was described by the newspapers as "one of the best deputies on the force." He was survived by an "aged mother" at Hot Springs.

The line of duty death of J.L. Anders was only recently discovered by Bob Ernst of Stillwater, OK, and his name was submitted to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 1998. His name was to be added to the AK state police memorial in Anchorage in 1999 and his name was to be read at the statewide police memorial service each May.

Summary: U.S. Deputy Marshal J.L. Anders was shot and killed at Hot Springs, AK, on Friday, Sept. 9, 1921. He became the fifth known deputy U.S. Marshal killed in AK from 1897 to 1921. His killer was in turn killed by a posse a short time later on the same day.

The Skagway Daily Alaskan and Anchorage Daily Times reported that Marshal Anders was trying to serve a peace warrant on Sam Cote, "a farmer of Hot Springs," when he was shot and killed by Cote. A posse of eight men from Hot Springs "went out to take Cote into custody, who, resisting arrest, was killed."
