Bio: Kenneth Grant Nauska, 44, was born on May 15, 1921, in Petersburg, AK, to Thomas and Martha Nauska. He was the oldest of seven children (Kenneth, Irene, Frederick, Bernice, Norman, Lorena, and Marvin). Both of his parents were born in AK (his father in 1900 and his mother in 1904) as his paternal grandparents came to Kake in the territory of AK sometime before the gold rush. Young Kenneth was raised in Petersburg, AK, and attended Petersburg H.S. As a young man he worked as a fisherman, in a cannery, and at a saw mill (in Wrangell). He later owned his own "trolling boat" and worked as a commercial fisherman.
Nauska joined the Ketchikan Police Dept. in 1954 at the age of 34 and served that Dept. for three years before joining the Craig Police Dept. in 1957. He was a 9-year veteran of the Craig Dept. (and a 12-year law enforcement veteran) at the time of his death.
Kenneth Nauska married three times. He had one child, Kenneth Jr., from his first wife, Edna, and a second child, Phyllis, from his second wife. He had no children by his third wife, Maymie Elizabeth. |

Summary: |
Craig Officer Kenneth Grant Nauska was shot and killed while investigating an assault (stabbing). Around 11:45PM on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1966, Craig Police Chief (and Mayor) Gordon Madden responded to the residence of Bill Cogo, 45, at 3rd and Main in Craig in response to a call from Cogo that he had been stabbed by an acquaintance. The State Police report on the incident would later state that Cogo reported he had been stabbed by Stanley Carle after Cogo refused to allow Carle to stay at his house.
ChiefMayor Madden called medical personnel and then left the Cogo home. Chief Madden contacted Officer Nauska, who was off-duty, and the two attempted to locate Carle, but then returned to the Cogo house to check on his injuries.
After checking on Cogo, Madden and Nauska exited the Cogo house and were walking to the patrol car when Nauska stopped "because he heard a noise coming from the boardwalk that ran along the side of Cogo's house and Main Street." Nauska walked down the boardwalk and directed his flashlight in the direction of the noise. Carle, who was hiding in the bushes, fired one round of buckshot into Nauska's chest "from ambush." As the wounded officer turned and attempted to retreat to his patrol vehicle, Carle fired a second round of buckshot into Nauska's back, killing him. Carle escaped and AK state troopers were called in from Ketchikan (60 miles west of Craig) to assist in the search for the fugitive killer. The following day, Carle was found by troopers hiding under a building at the Ward Cove Fishery in Craig.

Disposition: |
Carle was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced life in prison. Prison records indicate that he began his sentence at Marion Penitentiary in Marion, IL, on Sept. 9, 1966, but died on Aug. 9, 1969 (after serving 3 years) "from a rupture of pseudo cyst of the pancreas, including a blood vessel, which ruptured into the stomach." |
