born 05 Aug 1764, Norton, Bristol County, MA and the son of Lewis & Abiah 'Cobb' Sweeting.
It would seem Mr. Sweeting wrote his own version of events in a subsequently printed book titled 'The Narrative of Whiting Sweeting', in which he perhaps disagrees with official versions in that Constable Quimby was perhaps stabbed and not shot; and the warrant was for theft and not trespassing.

Constable Darius Quimby was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man on a trespassing warrant.
Constable Quimby is the first known law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty in the United States.

The suspect was found guilty of murdering Constable Quimby in the July session of the New York State Supreme Court and was hanged on August 26, 1791. |
