Summary: Perry Landrum was elected as the Constable for Precinct 4 in Fannett, Jefferson County, on November 6, 1906. He was commissioned on February 11, 1907. He had been a constable for 3 months and 6 days when we killed. The newspaper reported he was a deputy constable for a considerable time which indicates he was probably a deputy constable before being elected in 1906. Landrum was also the Postmaster in the Odelia community, located in western Jefferson County.

Constable Landrum had arrested Tom Jackson, 21, previously for assaulting an elderly man. He later arrested Jackson and several other young men for train riding without a ticket. Jackson complained that Landrum cursed him in front of several young ladies. Jackson made threats to kill the constable. On Friday, May 17, 1907, Constable Landrum was traveling on horseback on a public road about three-fourths of a mile from Odelia and about fifteen miles from Beaumont. Family history reports that Jackson hid in the bushes and assassinated the constable by shooting him in the chest with a shotgun.

Jackson surrendered to officers, admitted the shooting, and was locked up in the county jail and charged with murder. He claimed self defense. He said the constable told him they both could not live in Odelia, and drew his pistol, and fired a shot at him that left powder burns on his arm. Jackson claims he shot the constable to save his own life.

Jackson was indicted for murder on May 22, 1907. On October 29, 1907, Jackson pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary. He was released six months later.

The newspaper said Landrum had been married twice and was survived by his wife and 2 children, and he had two grown children. Landrum was buried in the Landrum Cemetery, Fannett, Jefferson County. His tombstone reads: J. Perry Landrum, Dec. 12, 1861 May 13, 1907. The day of death is incorrect on the tombstone.
