Summary: |
Sergeant Edward T. Crowley and his partner, Patrolman Donald McCormick attempted to arrest a wanted armed robber in his apartment. When they went to the home, the were met at the door by the wife. As the officers began to look around they found the man standing in a closet in his underwear and Sergeant Crowley ordered him to get dressed.
As he was sitting on the couch getting dressed, the suspect pulled out a revolver from under the couch. He ordered the detectives, "Don't move and you won't get hurt". Shots were exchanged between the suspect and Patrolman McCormick.
Sergeant Edward Crowley and Patrolman Donald McCormick were both shot and killed in the exchange.
The suspect was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and executed in the electric chair October 17, 1952.
Sergeant Edward Crowley is survived by his wife and children.
