Constable Hafer was struck and killed by a truck when he went into the road to remove an intoxicated man. He was able to save the man, but was unable to save himself.
The incident was witnessed by Constable Hafer's son, Elmer Hafer, who was killed in the line of duty two years later while serving as chief of the Aberdeen Police Department.
