Summary: |
Charles Delaney and John Cooper escaped from the Brazoria County Jail in Angleton. The escapees were armed and headed to the rail station to catch a train to Houston but encountered stationmaster J.T. Tut Hardin. Hardin was shot and killed. The sheriff and a posse of 5 men located Steve Hayes, a cousin of Delaney, in Sandy Point. Munson joined the posse, and since he had employed the man, he approached Hayes cabin. Either Hayes or Delaney fired one blast from a shotgun from inside the cabin that struck Munson in the face and chest. Munson calmly turned his horse around and rode several feet before dismounting and falling to ground dead. Hayes and Delaney fled the scene. Other posses accidently killed three men who they assumed were the escapees. Family history reports Hayes was later killed and Delaney arrested and sent to prison.
Munson was from a prominent family and was survived by his wife and three children. He was buried in the Munson Cemetery in Baileys Prairie.
