Summary: |
Patrolman Herbert Gillis was killed in a motorcycle accident in the early morning hours when his motorcycle struck a Halloween barricade.
After receiving notice of an incident on Butrick Street, Patrolman Gillis and his partner, Special Officer Charles E. Pelton, went to investigate. En route Patrolman Gillis failed to see an obstruction in the roadway, a 10-foot, 4-by-6-inch plank stretched across the road. His motorcycle and sidecar hit the plank and swerved into an oncoming car.
Both officers were thrown from the motorcycle and sidecar and suffered skull fractures. Special Officer Pelton died instantly and Patrolman Gillis was taken to the hospital and died at 12:30 am.
It was later discovered that seven teenagers were responsible for putting the plank in the roadway and arrested.
Patrolman Gillis was survived by his wife and two infant children.
